For Ruby Tuesday, I have something red from our garden to share. Pyracantha, also known as Firethorn, is a large evergreen shrub in the rose family that produces attractive berries in the fall.
Here are the berries ripening in September, October and November:
Pyracantha is drought-tolerant and used in landscaping all around Tucson.
Ours grew quickly to the size of a small tree.
A little hermit thrush was helping itself to berries the other day, but most of our backyard birds don't seem interested in the fruit.
The complementary colors of red berries and green leaves do look festive this time of year. Happy Holidays!

Pyracantha grows around here too. Some people trim it into dense hedges, shape it almost topary like or train it up the sides of buildings. Berta planted some against the fence in my yard last year and they had brilliant berries in Oct. Now all gone. Nice captures of Red Diane.
ReplyDeleteSo THAT's what pyracantha looks like. What lovely berries.
ReplyDeleteGreat choice for ruby tuesday. It brings back memories of my childhood.
ReplyDeleteI was in the AZ desert one summer long ago, and nothing was in bloom, a greenish gray settled on the desert floor. But it seems that the well known desert bloom is beginning. Beautiful ruby berries we see, and it must be beautiful when new growth is everywhere...
ReplyDeleteAt least here in New England, our Christmas Cactus is in bloom!
Festive, indeed! Pretty red berries, perfect for a Ruby Tuesday post.

Hi Diane. The Pyracantha is so pretty and so in-tuned with the season. We have something similar, called the Mexican Pepper, which has the same kind of berries (but its aggressive behavior makes it quite unpopular on the island). Nice hermit!
ReplyDeleteI have the same red in my garden
ReplyDeleteIt looks always beautiful :-)
Unique shots you make ....
Looks nice, but the best part is that you get to enjoy it every day.
