A tram driver/tour guide at Sabino Canyon has the birds eating out of his hand. One at a time, cactus wrens, cardinals and pyrrhuloxias will take bits of cashew nuts from his open hand.

I’ve never handfed a wild bird myself, have you?
awsome photos, and cool tittle too!
ReplyDeleteAmazing!
ReplyDeleteWhat is the point of hand feeding wild birds? I do like your photos, though.
ReplyDeleteOutstanding photos, Diane! The cactus wren photo, in particular, is worthy of enlargement and framing.
ReplyDeleteI have never hand fed any bird; am very content to have them visit the feeders we have in our yard.
Amazing. They must think he is a cactus!
ReplyDeleteTom, I imagine it's fun to study birds up close while allowing them the freedom to fly away.
ReplyDeleteOh very cool--I'm taking some seed with me the next time I go. :)
ReplyDeleteDiane, both the birds and your pix are amazing! Very unique and beautiful birds. Their feathers have nice colours. Happy Wednesday!
ReplyDeleteNo I have never hand fed a wild bird ... only pigeons in St Mark's Square in Venice and they are hardly wild!
ReplyDeleteNo way a bird would let me come close to hand fed it, Diane..They will fly as soon as they see my shadow..
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos, Diane!
I just can't imagine the thrill! I have a cousin in OK who had resident sparrow (I think) that would eat out of his hand, and came to expect it each and every day! They were friends! ~karen

ReplyDeleteWow. That cactus wren photo is amazing. What a gorgeous creature and it posed so nicely for you!
ReplyDeleteNo I have not but what I would give to be able to do that. I love birds. Fantastic shots too.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots, I would love to handfeed a bird. I have held the hummingbird feeders while they are sipping.
ReplyDeleteI feed "my" sparrows, pigeons, and other wild birds. They fly away even before I can whip out my camera.
ReplyDeleteBird whisperer, great idea like Caser, the Dog whisperer.
Beautiful photos Diane, the cactus wren is such a cute little fellow.
ReplyDeleteWhen we lived on the other side of the state I had Steller's Jays that would take peanuts from my squirrel feeder. One of the females would take peanuts from my hand. She would even come to the back door and wait for me. I have also hand fed Gray Jays in Alaska.
the cactus wren fits so well in its environment! Great pics, Diane! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to see these birds behaving like pets!
