Bird Whisperer

A tram driver/tour guide at Sabino Canyon has the birds eating out of his hand.  One at a time, cactus wrens, cardinals and pyrrhuloxias will take bits of cashew nuts from his open hand.

I’ve never handfed a wild bird myself, have you?

  3. Outstanding photos, Diane! The cactus wren photo, in particular, is worthy of enlargement and framing.

I have never hand fed any bird; am very content to have them visit the feeders we have in our yard.

  5. Tom, I imagine it's fun to study birds up close while allowing them the freedom to fly away.

  8. No I have never hand fed a wild bird ... only pigeons in St Mark's Square in Venice and they are hardly wild!

  9. No way a bird would let me come close to hand fed it, Diane..They will fly as soon as they see my shadow..

    Gorgeous photos, Diane!

  10. I just can't imagine the thrill! I have a cousin in OK who had resident sparrow (I think) that would eat out of his hand, and came to expect it each and every day! They were friends! ~karen

  16. Great shots, I would love to handfeed a bird. I have held the hummingbird feeders while they are sipping.

  17. I feed "my" sparrows, pigeons, and other wild birds. They fly away even before I can whip out my camera.

Bird whisperer, great idea like Caser, the Dog whisperer.

  18. Beautiful photos Diane, the cactus wren is such a cute little fellow.

When we lived on the other side of the state I had Steller's Jays that would take peanuts from my squirrel feeder. One of the females would take peanuts from my hand. She would even come to the back door and wait for me. I have also hand fed Gray Jays in Alaska.
