Rufus pecanosaurus

When I first saw these tall red things at Reid Park in Tucson, Arizona,
I didn't know what they were.
Alien figures...exposed roots...giant blood vessels?
Later, I learned the full title of this playful life-sized 1988 piece:
Inverted Pecans in Ceremonial Red (Rufus pecanosaurus)
Stripped of their bark, five pecan trees
are painted red and installed upside down.

More information from Smithsonian Art Museum Research Information System (SIRIS).

Isn't it amazing what people will think of doing with the most unlikely things... Only the true mind of an artist would have conceived this marvelous idea for recycling trees :D

Oh wow I would never have thought that they were trees painted red. They looked like aliens on stilts or something.

This is so odd, isn't it? It is something you will not see anywhere else, that's for sure (at least I woudn't think so, anyway).

Thanks for showing these weird, alien-like sculptures!

WOW, I've never seen anything like that! Thanks for explaining, so we won't feel we've been invaded!

I remember reading about these shortly after I moved to Tucson almost 15 years ago. They were one of my first excursions to the local parks. I love how you captured them! Great Job!

Rather captivating in red, especially with the green trees behind. Thanks for sharing :)
