I am learning that dragonflies can be hard to identify.

However, this filigree skimmer was easy for me to name since Chris at Las Adventuras had already done the work of identifying one like it for his blog.

With wings resembling skeletonized leaves, it seems the filigree skimmer has the perfect camouflage for this wooded area.
And finally, this large dragonfly that landed on a boulder might be a serpent ringtail...perhaps.

Well, no matter what they're called, I think dragonflies are cute!

Wowza! Great shots. I am macro challenged. Are you still using your Canon for this? Because they are marvelous! I know Magpie will love them!
Hi Tracy, Yes I'm still using the Canon point-and-shoot. Rather than choosing macro, I shot these from far away and zoomed way in.

Dragonflies are beautiful and important to me is to recognize them, but the view. They've done a wonderful picture. This with wings similar to the leaves is amazing. Yours.
They are so diverse.
No Matter how you do it, your photos are so clear and wonderful.
I have noticed this year, besides the Butterflies the Dragonflies are everywhere.

Great photos! I haven't seen a dragonfly in ages but I remember them from my childhood growing up in Arizona!

I absolutely adore dragonflies ... don't you feel like there's something mystical as well as primordial in their energy? Okay, I admit I also adore them because of their huge appetite for mosquitos (who, I am sad to say, are one of those insects I find it very difficult to admire).

Diane, these are great pictures. I love all of them. Flame skimmer yes. Neon skimmer....I think. I just got one on camera yesterday and it was gorgeous. Dragonflies are a little bit of perfection....and Sabino has so many wonderful ones flying around.

My, my, the wings of the skimmer looks like a wrought iron design OR like they were cross stitched on some very sheer lace! It is absolutely amazing how intricate and detailed the designs of Mother Nature can be, most times solely to cammoflage an animal. Really neat!
Amazing that you're able to find so many different kinds, the last one is very interesting to me.
When you pay attention, you realize that dragonflies look cooler than most people would ever consider giving them credit for.
